My New Life
Almost 18 years ago, Ameer Khan was diagnosed with a spinal cord injury after surviving multiple gunshot wounds. Despite many setbacks Ameer remains positive and found his way back to a normal life. In an interview he shared his story and told us how spinal cord injury has affected his life.
How did you sustain your spinal cord injury?
I was involved in a fight which resulted in me been shot five times.
How has your life changed since then?
I was a 19-year-old boy with my whole life ahead of me and I was faced with a life in a wheelchair. Everything changed, my eating, drinking, sleeping, even my thoughts. It was like I was baby all over again. It’s been a bumpy ride but honestly, I’ve accomplished more out of life after ending up in a wheelchair than while I was walking. Sometimes God has to step in and show you exactly who is in charge.
What further goals did you set yourself after the accident?
It took me a long time to come to terms with my new life but once I did, I really wanted to find a job and get involved in some sort of sport again. Today, almost eighteen years after the incident, I just take it one day at a time and always try to stay positive even if there are obstacles in my way.
What are the most positive aspects in your life?
It took me about 2-3 years to realize that life doesn’t end when you’re in a wheelchair. It seemed like it did for a long time to me but it didn’t and the most precious gift that I wasted was time. As long as you have a positive mental attitude, and are passionate about something, which for me was sport, roll with it. God first and then my family and a handful of friends are the most positive driving forces in my Life.
What are your dreams for the future?
I would like to play a role in getting more disabled people involved in sport and social activities. All are welcome to join our Wheels on Wings team and uplift one family at least once every month.
